Winter in the Eastern Blacksea Region
Unique views of the Gito Plateau
The silence of nature at 2000 meters
Cooperating and spending time as a community
We will meet at Trabzon Airport at the designated time. Afterwards we will take the Havaş bus to Ardeşen and then take a minibus to our guesthouse located on the banks of Fırtına River. We will decide what to do when we get there. A night hike might be a good idea.
Today will be a long day as we will be walking up to the Gito Plateau from the village of Meydan. Before taking off we will go to the center of Çamlıhemşin to do some shopping. Then we will drive up to the village of Meydan. After our final preparations and with our packs on our backs we will start hiking. Of course we do not know how the weather and snow will be that day but more than likely there will be hard and settled snow on the ground. The owner of the guesthouse Serhan will also be joining us. Our walk will take approximately 5 hours. We will have a rest when we get to our guesthouse, but not for long. We will make lunch preparations and shovel the snow all together. Since we will be carrying everything on our back please make sure you carefully read the gear and equipment you will need under the title “keep in mind and have in your backpack”. It will be a tiring day but be sure that it will be worth it. Then finally we can all go and rest. We can do little walks or enjoy sliding in the snow on plastic bags with those who want to.
After breakfast we will decide what to do depending on the weather and ourselves. Under normal circumstances the program would be to walk to the ridge of the plateau and back in 3 hours but if the weather is very misty we do not walk. Instead we tire our bodies by playing and sliding in the snow. Lunch will be prepared by Serhan and those who choose to stay indoors. Being in Gito in the winter requires total cooperation. Afternoon will be ours to rest.
Probably everybody will want to walk today. We will walk to the village of Badara through forest paths and stabilized roads. We will mostly be walking downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back. We can get deep in the forest and even get lost. There aren’t enough words to explain the fun of walking with snow underneath and a thick forest all around. Of course the snow is always the decisive factor on these tours. If the snow is very deep and soft it will be very difficult to walk on it so we will create an alternative program, such as reading and sleeping
After breakfast we will start to make preparations for our return. Since our flights will be at 8 PM or later we need to make it to the Havaş station in Ardeşen by 4 PM the latest. After our final preparations we will take our backpacks and start descending. We will either walk down the steep hill that we used coming up or we will walk around the plateau road which is longer but easier. We will decide according to the weather and timing. We will have lunch at Çamlıhemşin. We will then carry on to Ardeşen and take the Havaş bus to the airport.
Arrival: You should get a flight to Trabzon that will allow you to be there at 10 PM the latest. There are many flights from both airports in Istanbul. Those of you flying from Izmir only have one choice: Sunexpress
Return: There are many alternatives. Any flight after 8 PM from Trabzon is suitable.
WHAT TO BRING
There will be blankets at the guesthouse but there is no heating system in the rooms. The building is totally wooden so it can get very cold. There will be a stove burning in the living room and we sometimes stay in the living room huddled up together but you may stay in your room with your own sleeping bag and blankets. The guesthouse will be cold and there will be only one stove burning in the communal area.
The most important equipment in snowy locations is boots. You should have waterproof and snow proof walking boots preferably made of single-piece leather with 4/3 souls. Your feet carry your whole weight and you should be able to walk in the snow without getting wet and in comfort.
One of the general comments our guests say at the end of our tours is “Next time I will not exaggerate in packing”. One pair of waterproof trousers is enough on these walks. An alternative is to wear a pair of thick winter outdoor trousers with a waterproof shell. As a spare you can bring an ordinary pair of trekking trousers to wear at the airport and when you are indoors.
A pair of warm slippers will make you very comfortable while at the guesthouse.
A fleece jacket for the cold and a snow jacket for the outside conditions is a must.
During the walks uphill the snow jackets are too much and they will make you sweat, thus make you get wet, especially if the sun is strong. So for rain or snow you should have a thin waterproof and breatheable jacket with you as well. A pair of snow goggles and a pair of waterproof trousers to use while playing in the snow will help you enjoy yourself even more.
A snow hat accompanied by a fleece beanie and ear covers make life more pleasurable in the snow. Also a pair of waterproof gloves and a pair of woolly gloves should always be in your bag.
Hand and feet warmers can be lifesavers when it gets too cold. You can find them at any outdoor store.
A head torch, sunglasses, 5 t-shirts and plenty of socks will complete our essentials.
