We will take you to Aigai, the “goat land” that gave the Aegean its name. You might even get the chance to swim at this hidden paradise in the magnificent geography of the Yunt Mountain
Aigai ancient city and its agora.
Valleys of the Yunt Mountain & the Kocaçay Stream
Walk up to the Temple of Apollo
After meeting at the designated times and places in Izmir we head out north. We will take a breakfast break en route. Our journey to Aigai will take approximately 1,5 hours. There will be many things to talk about on the way because we will be following a very important route of antiquity. We will start driving up into the mountains from Yeni Şakran. Aigai is located on the Gün Mountain, 2 km south of the Köseler village on the Yunt Mountain. First we will have a 1 hour hike up to the Temple of Apollo accompanied by beautiful views. After visiting the temple we will take you to a little hidden paradise where we might get the chance to take a dip in the water (don’t forget to bring your swimsuits!). After this break we will head back to the entrance of the ancient city via a partially different trail. At this point it will be lunch time and we will have our packed picnic lunch. Then we will dive into Aigai – a rather unknown ancient site but we definitely think it is one of the most beautiful ones in Turkey with the grandeur of the Yunt Mountain, the well preserved natural forest, and the fertile valleys fed by the Kocaçay Stream. We will see the necropolis (ancient cemetery), agora (town square and market place), parliament building, gymnasium (school) and many more bringing us to the theater and the Temple of Athena, all accompanied by beautiful views. On the way back to Izmir you can buy some organic products that come from the farmer’s market
IMPORTANT NOTE: Even though this tour does not involve harsh conditions do not forget that we will still be on nature trails and that you should still be well prepared especially to avoid sprains, injuries and getting cold.
